Involvement
As a first-generation college student, it has been very important for me to get the full “experience”. As such, I have been involved on campus, trying out any activities that interest me.
Community service is important to me, and so I have been active with the soup kitchen at St. Thomas of Canterbury. Loyola student volunteers meet up at around 3:30 on Tuesday and Friday and travel to the church. Once there, as a group we prepare the meal and set up the dining space. This is such a great experience because I love to cook and it is heartwarming to help those in need. I especially enjoy serving food in the dining hall because you get to interact with the guests more. It is very rewarding, and you can tell it means a lot to them to have someone actually speak to them. Too often the homeless and destitute are ignored.
The organization that I have committed to the most is Loyola Emergency Medical Services, or LUCEMS. We are the EMT service on campus, and our philosophy is that there is no call too small or large for us. I feel very connected to my university through this organization. We are a close-knit group, and we serve a great community need. Additionally, Loyola EMS has been a great organization because it has enabled me to develop skills in the field that I love: health care. As a member of Loyola EMS, I volunteer to work shifts as an EMT on campus. We operate non-stop during the weekends, and from 6pm to 8am during the work week. I would recommend Loyola EMS to any student at LUC interested in the medical field. You get to have a great time, while making a difference in the community! In my opinion, the best part of Loyola EMS is that our services are free. There is no cost to the patient for receiving care from us, and there is even the possibility to get a taxi waiver if the patient is well enough to forego the ambulance ride. My involvement with these organizations has been extremely rewarding, and one of the best parts of my experience at Loyola.
